Qualification objectives

The objective of this qualification are to support a role in the workplace where the individual may work or interact with people with learning disabilities.

Around 1.5 million people in the UK have a learning disability

Owing to the fact that they are likely to find it more difficult than others to describe their symptoms, a good knowledge of legislation and the healthcare system, as well as an understanding of signs and symptoms of various conditions, is essential for anyone working with individuals with learning disabilities.

Who is it suitable for?

This qualification is designed for learners with an interest in, or who are already working with, people with learning disabilities in a variety of roles.

Course units

To be awarded the Level 2 Certificate, staff are required to successfully complete 6 mandatory units.

Understand the context of supporting individuals with learning disabilities

This unit covers the potential delays and difficulties in speech, language, and social development sometimes faced by individuals with autism. It also covers methods and strategies that could be used when communicating with an individual with autism.

This unit explores the meaning of learning disability and considers issues closely linked with learning disability support. These include an awareness of how the attitudes and beliefs of others affect individuals who have learning disabilities.

This unit introduces themes of inclusion, human rights, advocacy, empowerment and active participation, and also considers the central place of communication in working with individuals who have learning disabilities.

Principles of safeguarding and protection in health and social care

This unit introduces the important area of safeguarding individuals from abuse. It identifies different types of abuse and the signs and symptoms that might indicate abuse is occurring.

It considers when individuals might be particularly vulnerable to abuse and what a learner must do if abuse is suspected or alleged.

Introduction to personalisation in social care

This unit is aimed at those working in a wide range of settings. It introduces understanding of how personalisation affects the provision of social care services, with a focus on the systems, skills and support needed to implement personalised provision.

Principles of positive risk-taking for individuals with disabilities

This unit provides the knowledge behind positive risk-taking. It highlights the importance of positive risk-taking for individuals with disabilities. It explores how to take a person-centred approach to enabling individuals to take risks and how to balance risk-taking with duty of care. The legislative context is also covered.

Introductory awareness of autistic spectrum conditions

The unit provides introductory awareness on autistic spectrum conditions. It provides learners with key areas of knowledge and explores important themes such as individuality, communication, behaviour and person-centred support.

Principles of supporting individuals with a learning disability to access healthcare

This unit provides learners with the knowledge required to contribute to supporting an individual to access and use healthcare services.

Eligibility

Location

Been in the UK or EU for three years for purposes other than study.

Age

19+ at the start of the academic year.

Qualifications

  • Not on an apprenticeship.
  • Not completed any part of the course before.
  • 19-23-year-olds must have a level 2 or higher prior to attainment.
