Overview of Cancer Support

Qualification aims and objectives

This qualification aims to:

  • Focus on the study of cancer support in the health and social care sector
  • Offer breadth and depth of study, incorporating a key core of knowledge.

The objective of this qualification is to give learners knowledge of:

  • What cancer is, its diagnosis and treatment
  • The support needs of people living with cancer.

One in two people will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime

For many individuals, diagnosis can be a daunting and overwhelming time. Being able to access the right levels of care and services provides valuable support when people need it most. As cancer treatments are improved and more people survive cancer, an awareness of the impact of living with cancer long-term and knowledge of how to support individuals is vital for anyone caring for someone with cancer. 

This short course is great CPD for those working in health and social care, but is also suitable for those who care for someone living with cancer.

Who is it suitable for?

This qualification is designed for learners who want to increase their knowledge and understanding of supporting adults living with cancer. 

It could be used as a continuous professional development (CPD) qualification for learners already working within the health care and social care sectors or for individuals providing informal care

Course units

Learners are required to successfully achieve 4 mandatory units.

Cancer awareness

In this unit the learner will gain knowledge of the different categories and types of cancer and its prevalence in the UK. The learner will also understand how the approach to cancer care has changed over time.

Introduction to the diagnosis and treatment of cancer

In this unit, the learner will gain knowledge of the detection, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer. The learner will also understand the impact of being diagnosed with cancer has on an individual, family, and friends.

Introduction to cancer care and support

In this unit, the learner will gain knowledge and understanding of how family members and others support individuals with cancer care. The learner will also understand how coping strategies and self-management can help support emotional and mental wellbeing.

Introduction to end of life and bereavement care

In this unit, the learner will gain knowledge of end of life and bereavement care and what factors can affect an individual’s views on death and dying. The learner will also understand the process of loss and the stages of grief.

Eligibility

Location

Been in the UK or EU for three years for purposes other than study.

Age

19+ at the start of the academic year.

Qualifications

  • Not on an apprenticeship.
  • Not completed any part of the course before.
  • 19-23-year-olds must have a level 2 or higher prior to attainment.
